제주4·3은 1947년 3월 1일부터 1954년 9월 21일까지 제주도에서 발생한 무장봉기와 그에 따른 진압 과정에서 수만 명의 주민이 희생된 사건입니다. 해방 이후 분단과 미군정의 탄압에 저항하다 시작된 이 사건은, 초토화 작전으로 중산간 마을 대부분이 불태워지고 주민 다수가 학살당하는 비극으로 이어졌습니다.
Jeju 4·3 refers to an armed uprising and the ensuing suppression that took place on Jeju Island from March 1, 1947 to September 21, 1954, during which tens of thousands of civilians were killed. What began as resistance against division and U.S. military occupation escalated into a scorched-earth campaign that burned most mid-mountain villages and resulted in mass killings of residents.
